Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA)

Occupational therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession that provides services to individuals of all ages who are physical, psychologically, or developmentally disabled, including those suffering from strokes, heart diseases, arthritis, diabetes, serious burns, spinal cord injuries, and psychiatric disorders. The profession tailors the rehabilitation process individually for each patient and, through evaluation and treatment, seeks to achieve restoration or improvement of impaired function. The goal for occupational therapy is to assist patients in developing the capacities that remain after disease, accident, or deformity. The Occupational Therapy Assist (OTA) will be working under the direct supervision of the Occupational Therapist and is able to perform most routine treatment procedures, assist an Occupational Therapist with complex procedures, and perform some measures of instruction.

The OTA program is offered cooperatively between Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Caddo Kiowa Technology Center. General education courses are taught at SWOSU-Sayre while all technical occupational specialty courses are conducted at Caddo Kiowa Technology Center in Fort Cobb. Upon completion of the two-year program, the student will be awarded the Associate in Applied Science Degree by SWOSU-Sayre. Graduates of the program are qualified to sit for the licensing examination given by the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board. After passing this exam, the graduates will be Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs). They may then apply for state licensure through the State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.
