Speaker Series

Since 1995, we have organized an annual program for criminal justice students, other students, and the general public, consisting of an evening program with a speaker or speakers from off-campus dealing with a timely criminal justice topic. The Criminal Justice Speaker Series is co-sponsored by the Criminal Justice program and the Criminal Justice Students’ Association. Previous program topics include to the OKC bombing, Truth-in-Sentencing, and
Oklahoma’s Self-Defense Act. The Director of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, a former SWOSU student, was a featured speaker. Examples of recent programs include a presentation on drugs and crime, including a speaker from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and a reformed drug dealer. Another program dealt with the postal inspection service. Additionally, a program involved a presentation on “Forensics and the Law in Oklahoma.”  Previous programs have dealt with statutory rape and its effect on college students.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in these and other formal, outside-class learning experiences, such as Law Day and political science programs.
