History is the core of a liberal arts education. It provides students with skills necessary for life-long learning. History challenges students to question, research, and assess factual information and express it in original, interpretative essays. The study of history is the method of observing the course of human events.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University offers a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Bachelor of Arts in Education in history. Students may earn either a minor in history in Arts and Science or an endorsement in Teacher Education, the latter program aimed at secondary school teachers who have another major, but who also wish to teach history.
