Our major focus is teaching which is reflected in our small class sizes and our dedicated faculty and preceptors. If you are interested in a rewarding career as a health care professional, then consider the Doctor of Pharmacy program at SWOSU. Our alumni are leaders in all areas of pharmacy practice.
Preparation for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Degree
The Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum is a challenging, but rewarding educational experience. There are certain prerequisites that students will need in order to be considered for admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Students must first complete two years of pre-professional study, including general education courses, as well as specific courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Candidates must also take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT) and be invited to interview with our faculty. After admission to the College of Pharmacy, students will spend four years studying pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacotherapy, including a year of rotations in a variety of pharmacy practice settings. SWOSU College of Pharmacy graduates consistently perform above the national average on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), the national licensing exam for pharmacy.
Twice Yearly Admissions
SWOSU has the only Doctor of Pharmacy program in the nation that admits twice yearly. We offer a 2 + 4 YEAR PROGRAM (two years of undergraduate study for pre-requisites and four years in the professional program). We do not require or give preference to students with a degree.
Outstanding NAPLEX Pass Rates
Our NAPLEX (pharmacist licensure) first-time pass rates have ranged from 91-100% and have always been above the national average.
Affordable Tuition Cost
Ranked #3 in the nation as a program with high graduate salaries to low student debt in the 2017 SoFI ranking of affordability.
SWOSU also offers an out-of-state tuition waiver for students who meet certain minimum requirements.
Small Class Sizes and Engaged Faculty
Each College of Pharmacy class consists of 30-50 students. This allows individualized student support.
One of the Safest Cities in Oklahoma
Weatherford was named the “Safest City in Oklahoma” according to the 2019 report from National Council for Home Safety and Security. (Weatherford's current ranking)
PharmD/MBA Dual Degree Program
Pharmacy students can further distinguish themselves through admission to the dual degree program in conjunction with the SWOSU School of Business, which combines a Doctor of Pharmacy with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). The dual program bestows upon students not only expert pharmaceutical knowledge, but an advanced understanding of business and management principles – giving graduates of this program an edge over the competition in the workforce.
Degree Specialization in Pharmacy Leadership
The Center of Excellence in Pharmacy Leadership, Innovation, and Quality Outcomes at the SWOSU College of Pharmacy provides an opportunity for qualified Doctor of Pharmacy students to obtain a degree specialization. This specialization includes coursework and experiences focusing on innovative approaches to quality improvement in healthcare. These graduates are uniquely qualified to address the challenges created by the quality gap that exists in healthcare today.
SWOSU offers research opportunities in basic, clinical, social, and administrative sciences.
