Research at the College of Pharmacy

Research and scholarly activity are important components of the faculty and student experience at the SWOSU College of Pharmacy. A number of faculty are currently engaged in either independent or collaborative research projects that are relevant to pharmacy practice and the pharmaceutical sciences. Research efforts are supported by various agencies and programs, including the SWOSU Office of Sponsored Programs, the IdeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE), and the pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmacy students have research opportunities through enrollment in classes with specific Researchresearch objectives or through employment by the university as a research assistant. Research results are frequently published in journals or in the form of poster presentations at state, regional and national symposiums and meetings. Through participation in research projects, students have been given opportunities to explore drug development, dosage form design and dissolution properties, pharmacogenomics, natural products, drug synthesis and analysis, and drug regulatory issues.

Specific examples of research projects conducted by faculty and students in the COP and through collaborative efforts have included analysis of Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy actions against pharmacists and pharmacies, surveying Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs actions against registrants, investigation of the antioxidant capacity of natural products, antimalarial drug development, antibreast cancer drug development antimicrobial drug development, and determination of the dissolution properties of drug delivery systems.
