Reading Strategies for Comprehension

  • What is the topic?
  • What do I hope to get out of this reading?
  • What terms would be helpful to know?
  • Why is this reading important (to the course, curriculum)?
  • Highlight or bracket the main idea or thesis of the reading, and put a symbol by it (usually found in introduction or opening paragraphs)
  • Read each paragraph and make a short bullet point on what it says\means
  • Make marginal notes or comments instead
  • Summarize sections\main points of the chapter
  • Keep a question list
  • Make your own titles for sections
  • Make outlines, flow charts, or diagrams to help with concept development
  • Keep a questions list
  • Reconcile questions list with lecture
  • Use lecture notes to detail book notes
