Marquis Family Supports SWOSU Pharmacy Students with Major Gift

The family of the late Dr. Sara Nell (Bergstrom) Marquis has made significant investments in students studying pharmacy at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) with locations in Weatherford and Sayre.

Recently, the Marquis Family presented SWOSU with a major gift to the Dr. Sara Nell (Bergstrom) Marquis Memorial Scholarship Fund. The gift marks the culmination of several years of generous giving to SWOSU’s mission of training the next generation of pharmacists.

The Dr. Sara Nell (Bergstrom) Marquis Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2016. As an endowed scholarship, it provides ongoing assistance to SWOSU students studying pharmacy with home residences in Oklahoma, Texas or New Mexico.

Dr. Marquis was on the faculty of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy from 1987 until her death in 2008. She was a native of the Portales (NM) and Clovis (NM) areas. She held undergraduate degrees from Wayland Baptist (TX) University and SWOSU (Class of 1976) and earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from SWOSU in 2003.

Dr. Marquis and her husband, Charles “Chuck” Marquis (SWOSU Class of 1972) of Weatherford, raised two daughters: Carissa (Marquis) King (SWOSU Class of 2008), also of Weatherford, and Alicia (Marquis) Chapa (SWOSU Class of 2014) of Oklahoma City.

“SWOSU is better able to fulfill our calling of providing a quality higher education to all because of caring alumni and friends like the Marquis family,” said SWOSU President Dr. Randy L. Beutler. “Professor Sara Marquis was a valued member of our faculty family here on the Hilltop and we are grateful that her memory lives in the students who benefit from the scholarship that bears her name.”

The Dr. Sara Nell (Bergstrom) Marquis Memorial Scholarship Fund is stewarded by the SWOSU Foundation, Inc., which was established in 1977 to promote philanthropy and distribute funds to support the activities and programs of SWOSU. Located on the Weatherford campus in the historic Burton House, the Foundation currently stewards over $24 million in assets for the benefit of SWOSU.
