Working-Class Comic Book Heroes to be Focus of Thursday Talk
The Weatherford Library will host a book discussion by Dr. Marc DiPaolo, assistant professor in the SWOSU Department of Language & Literature, this Thursday, September 27, at 7 p.m. at the library, 219 E. Franklin.
Dr. DiPaolo will discuss a book he recently edited entitled, Working-Class Comic Book Heroes – Class Conflict and Populist Politics in Comics.
“In comic books, superhero stories often depict working-class characters who struggle to make ends meet, lead fulfilling lives, and remain faithful to themselves and their own personal code of ethics,” DiPaolo said. “Working-Class Comic Book Heroes: Class Conflict and Populist Politics in Comics examines working-class superheroes and other protagonists who populate heroic narratives in serialized comic books. Essayists analyze and deconstruct these figures, viewing their roles as fictional stand-ins for real-world blue-collar characters.”
Refreshments will be provided and copies of the book will be available for purchase. The public is invited. For additional information, contact the Weatherford Library, 580.772.3591.
