Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Music Department is hosting the Oklahoma Jazz Educators Fall Workshop on November 12-13, and a Monday evening free concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center on the Weatherford campus.
Dr. Richard Tirk, associate professor of music at SWOSU, said the two-day event will feature big band performances, clinics by guest artists, round table discussions with notable jazz educators, and a workshop for high school students working on the Oklahoma All State Jazz audition music.
Guests for the workshop include pianist/composer and SWOSU alum Dave Hanson. After graduating in 1976, Hanson went to Arizona State University for a composition degree and then was awarded the coveted Duke Ellington Scholarship award at the Eastman School of Music. Equally adept at film and orchestral arranging, Hanson now is the jazz composition and keyboard faculty member in the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver.
Also coming to the workshop is Hanson's colleague at the University of Denver and co-leader of the Denver based H2 Big Band—trumpeter Al Hood. Hood has shared the stage with many of jazz's elite performers from Clark Terry to Ray Charles and is considered one of the top Clifford Brown scholars in the nation.
Joining Hood and Hanson is Dr. Jim Pisano, newly appointed visiting assistant professor of saxophone and jazz at Wichita State University. Including directing Jazz Arts I at WSU, he is also the director of the Mid-Kansas Jazz Ensemble, an auditioned high school group. Pisano appears on over 10 CD's as a sideman and when not teaching in Kansas, performs in Cleveland (OH) with the Jazz Heritage Orchestra.
The guest artists plus others will join SWOSU Jazz Ensembles A & B for the free concert on November 12. Both ensembles will feature arrangements by Dave Hanson with other classic tunes including Brass Machine by Mark Taylor and Good News by Bob Mintzer.
