Volunteers Needed for Route 66 Area Special Olympics Bocce Tourney

SWOSU READ and Route 66 Thunder Special Olympics TeamThe SWOSU READ organization (Gamma Epsilon Alpha Delta) in the Department of Education recently donated two premium bocce kits for the local Route 66 Thunder Special Olympics. Coach Melissa Sharry and team members will use the sets to practice for bocce competitions and for fun events. Volunteers are needed to help with the Route 66 Area Special Olympics Bocce Tournament that will be held this Saturday, April 27, at ASAP Energy Field on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University campus in Weatherford.

Special Olympians in the Route 66 area cover students from Yukon west to the Texas border. Counties included are Roger Mills, Custer, Blaine, Kingfisher, Canadian, Caddo, Washita and Beckham.

Dr. Bruce Belanger said the tourney will start at 8 a.m. and run to approximately to 2 p.m. at ASAP Energy Field, located at the corner of Seventh and Davis Streets in Weatherford.

Bocce is a combination of skeeball, bowling and shuffleboard.

Belanger said volunteers are needed for registration, concession and shirt sales, running of the bocce courts and cleanup. Helpers will be there to assist with instructions/guidance. For more information, email or call Belanger at or 580.819.1504.
