World Languages Week Planned March 9-11 at SWOSU

The 3rd annual World Languages Week will be celebrated March 9-11 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

All activities will be held in the East Ballroom of the Memorial Student Center on the SWOSU campus, and everyone is invited to all the free activities.

An opening reception and study abroad session will be held on Monday, March 9, at 2 p.m. SWOSU Dean of Students Joshua Engle, Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning Director Lisa Friesen and Everett Dobson School of Business & Technology Associate Dean Dr. Patsy Parker will talk about the importance of languages and cultures based on their professional and personal experiences.

A study abroad session will follow the opening remarks. During the session, Dr. Tugba Sevin, associate professor of Spanish and Italian and SWOSU World Languages Coordinator, will give information about student exchange opportunities that SWOSU offers to students. SWOSU has made many agreements with several universities in Europe and around the world that students can study without paying extra tuition.

On Tuesday, March 10, at 3 p.m. there will be a cultural presentation by several international students. They will talk about the unique cultural aspects of their countries, including superstitions. After the session, there will be conversation tables in English, Spanish and Italian where students can enjoy practicing their foreign languages, meet new friends and play table games.

On Wednesday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. there will be a new member induction ceremony of the newly established chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Languages Honor Society. A banquet for members will follow the initiation ceremony.
