Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) student Jocelyn Thomas of Elk City has been named the 2021-22 academic year Ernestine “Ernie” (Holcomb) Wright Memorial Scholar.

Thomas is studying exercise science and athletic training at SWOSU. She umpires high school softball games in her spare time.

The Ernestine “Ernie” (Holcomb) Wright Memorial Scholarship is granted to a female SWOSU student studying kinesiology, exercise science, education in health and physical education, or parks & recreation management and is named for the late Ernestine “Ernie” (Holcomb) Wright (SWOSU Class of 1959), an emeritus instructor at SWOSU.

The Ernestine “Ernie” (Holcomb) Wright Memorial was generously established in 2018 by former Oklahoma State Representative G. Harold Wright and his wife Carol (Roberson) Wright, both members of the SWOSU Class of 1971 (Carol also earned her Master of Education degree from SWOSU in 1980). Harold was inducted into the SWOSU Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2020.

“Thank you so much to the Wright Family for this scholarship,” Thomas said. “This financial assistance is allowing me to focus on my studies and my extracurricular pursuits at SWOSU. I promise to pay it forward!”

The Ernestine “Ernie” (Holcomb) Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund is stewarded by the SWOSU Foundation, Inc., which was established in 1977 to promote philanthropy and distribute funds to support the activities and programs of SWOSU. Located on the Weatherford campus in the historic Burton House, the Foundation currently stewards nearly $30 million in assets for the benefit of SWOSU.
