SWOSU Announces Church Endowment for Mathematics

Dr. Gerry Church is thanked for his generous gift to the SWOSU Mathematics Department by SWOSU Foundation, Inc. Executive Director Garrett King.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) with locations in Weatherford, Sayre and Yukon has announced the creation of the Dr. Gerry & Phyllis Church Scholarship fund.

The fund has been generously endowed by Dr. Gerald “Gerry” Church of Mustang and represents SWOSU’s first-ever scholarship endowment created to benefit the SWOSU Department of Mathematics.

Church is a native of Dighton (KS).  He earned a Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University and Master of Arts from Arizona State University.  He completed his education from Oklahoma State University with a Doctor of Education in 1973. Church served as a professor of mathematics at SWOSU from 1966-2000. Church now resides in Mustang. Church and his late wife, Phyllis, enjoyed country and western dancing and traveling into retirement.

“This gift from Dr. Church will have a lasting impact on students for generations to come.  Never has a scholarship been established here at SWOSU specifically to benefit mathematics. We are truly grateful to Dr. Church for this historic investment in our students,” said Dr. Tom McNamara, chair of the SWOSU Mathematics Department.

The SWOSU Foundation, Inc. connects SWOSU’s philanthropic donors with students in need of financial assistance through scholarships.  To learn more about establishing a scholarship fund, contact Robbin Jennings,, 580-774-3267.
