Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) with locations in Weatherford, Sayre and Yukon has announced the establishment of the Rebecca Reddin Jones Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was established by family and friends of the late Rebecca Reddin Jones to benefit SWOSU students who demonstrate a passionate commitment to education and the teaching profession.

SWOSU student Robyn Clanton of Yukon has been named the first-ever Rebecca Reddin Jones Memorial Scholar. Clanton is a junior studying early childhood education.

“The late Rebecca Reddin Jones was a shining example of the quality teachers SWOSU has produced since its inception in 1901. She dedicated her life to public education and enriching the lives of others,” said SWOSU President Dr. Diana Lovell. “We are honored that her daughter, Charla Wille, and her many friends have chosen to honor Rebecca’s memory by establishing a scholarship for SWOSU students in her name. Congratulations to 2021-22 Rebecca Reddin Jones Scholar Robyn Clanton!”

Irene Rebecca Reddin Jones was born on June 19, 1924. Her parents were Ella May Boyd Reddin and Ivy Franklin Reddin. They were living in Doniphan (MO) when Rebecca was born.

Rebecca graduated from Oakwood High School in May 1943. In the Fall of 1943, she enrolled at SWOSU. She attended college for two semesters and qualified for an emergency teaching certificate. She continued her studies during the summer month and graduated from SWOSU in 1950 with a major in business and elementary education, plus a minor in dramatics. In 1986, Rebecca retired after teaching school for 43 years. Over the course of her career, Rebecca taught in one-room schoolhouses, single school districts and multi-schools districts.

On October 18, 1947, Rebecca was married to Charles W. Jones. In 1950 they moved to Oklahoma City. They have two children: a son, Charles William Jones II, and a daughter, Charla Ann Jones Wille.

The Rebecca Reddin Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund is stewarded by the SWOSU Foundation, Inc.
