Filing for SWOSU Student Senate Begins

Filing for Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s 61st Student Senate begins on Wednesday, August 23, on the Weatherford campus and continues through Friday, August 25.

The Student Senate is the legislative branch of student government and serves as the forum by which student interests and concerns are voiced, according to SWOSU Student Body President Garrett King. Student senators represent academic colleges and legislate on behalf of their student constituents. The Senate also provides oversight to the Executive Cabinet and the Student Supreme Court.

Student Body Vice President Sam Jennings of Oklahoma City is overseeing the student senatorial elections. Jennings is the constitutional chair of the Student Senate, serving as its presiding officer.

“The Student Senate is a prestigious, hard-working institution here at SWOSU,” Jennings said. “I encourage all students who want to take the lead in campus life and affairs, who want to really make a difference while they receive an education, to run for this student office.”

All filings must be made by 5 p.m. on Friday.

Students who want to run for the Student Senate may file all week in the Dean of Students’ Office, Stafford Building 214; at the 6 p.m. SGA Open House at the Student Government Center on Wednesday night; and at the Thursday, August 24, Organizational Fair at the Student Government Association (SGA) table.
