Soldier Care Packages Being Assembled During SWOSU Homecoming

Southwestern Oklahoma State University is honoring American soldiers at this year’s homecoming celebration on Saturday, October 28, on the Weatherford campus.

Care packages are going to be assembled for soldiers from items that are collected at various points on homecoming Saturday. Donations of items will be collected at the Weatherford Fire Department; at the 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dawgfest on the SWOSU campus; and at the 6 p.m. football game at Milam Stadium.

Brandi Gateley, assistant director for alumni and development at SWOSU, said the goal is to collect enough items that SWOSU can send one large package to each branch of the military.

“SWOSU’s homecoming theme this year is ‘Red, White & Bulldog’” Gateley said. “So, we’re calling this special drive the ‘Red, White & Bulldog Care Package.’”

In conjunction with this event, several biker organizations in western Oklahoma are teaming together to help collect items for the care packages. They are planning a ride that day in western Oklahoma and will kick off the event by riding through the SWOSU homecoming parade at 3 p.m. in downtown Weatherford.

Items that are needed for the care packages are: drink mixes, non-perishable snack foods, plastic utensils, hand-held video games, DVDs, toiletries, calling cards, letter writing materials, Gold Bond foot powder, books and magazines, music CDs, bug spray, protein bars, flea collars, sunscreen, unscented baby wipes, germ killer, brush ups, gently used books, DVD players, crossword books, beef jerky, disposable cameras, gum, chapstick, Clorox wipes, Febreeze, gel insoles for shoes, small battery operated fans, batteries and non-perishable food items.
