1996 National Championship SWOSU Football Team Plans Reunion at Homecoming

Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s homecoming celebration this weekend (October 27-28) will include a reunion of the 1996 SWOSU football team that won the NAIA national championship title.

Reunion organizer Rouben Tourian said the group’s first event will be a Friday night social at 7 p.m. at 108 E. Main Street in Weatherford. The public is invited to attend.

On Saturday morning, the team will have an 11 a.m. brunch at the University Grill on the SWOSU campus. The public is also invited. Tickets are $7.

Members of the team will ride in the 3 p.m. homecoming parade and then serve as honorary team captains at the 6 p.m. football game between the SWOSU Bulldogs and the UCO Bronchos.

The 1996 football team won the national championship title in the Bulldogs’ last year in the NAIA. SWOSU defeated Montana Tech, 33-31, to win the national title. The victory was a sweet one for the Bulldogs as they ended their long-time association with the NAIA. In 1997, SWOSU joined NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference.
