Essay and Art Contests Planned for MLK Event at SWOSU


Southwestern Oklahoma State University is planning a Martin Luther King in Black and White luncheon on January 15 on the Weatherford campus and, as part of the event, essay and art contests are planned for youth of all ages.

The art contest involves five different age categories. The planning committee is seeking paintings, crayon and marker art pictures of Dr. King or Dr. King at work. The submissions must be done only in black and white.

Competition categories include K-2nd grade; 3rd-5th grades; 6th-8th grades; 9th-12th grades; and SWOSU college students. Winners in each category will win $50 savings bonds.

Deadline for entries is December 10. Entries should be taken to the SWOSU Dean of Students Office in Room 214 of the Stafford Center or mailed to 100 Campus Drive, Weatherford OK 73096.

The essay contest will have three divisions and winners will each receive $100. Divisions are for youngsters under 12; over 12 years old; and SWOSU students. The essays must be 400 words or less. Participants should choose one of 10 quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King and describe parts of Dr. King’s work which helped both Blacks and Whites. The actual luncheon will be January 15 at 11:30 a.m. at the SWOSU Memorial Student Center Ballroom. The event is being sponsored by several SWOSU groups including the Collegiate Activities Board, Student Government Association, Black Student Association and the Student Oklahoma Education Association.
