Applications Being Accepted for SWOSU PLC

Applications are being accepted for the second President’s Leadership Class at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The program, which started in 2006, is for incoming freshmen at SWOSU. High school seniors who are interested in the program should apply by the deadline of March 1.

Randy Beutler, assistant to the president for strategic operations at SWOSU, said the PLC is a four-year program offered by SWOSU to recognize outstanding leadership qualities and to encourage students in their participation as SWOSU campus leaders.

Approximately fifteen freshmen will be selected for the program.

“We are looking for prospective students who have a strong interest in community service and leadership roles,” SWOSU President John Hays said. “The program is designed to identify and cultivate outstanding potential in class members by developing effective academic and social skills.”

Membership in the PLC will allow students to develop close associations with university administrators and meet scholars and dignitaries who visit campus.

Interested high school seniors should apply by March 1, 2007. Interviews will be conducted during the spring semester with selection being completed by early May. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: ACT of at least 24; top 40% of graduating class; or exceptional activities, athletics or community service.

First year participants will receive a $1,000 scholarship, room scholarship and enrollment in the PLC leadership course. During the second year, students will receive a $1,000 scholarship; an end-of-semester trip to a major city, tentatively New York City; and enrollment in the PLC course. During the third and fourth years of the program, students will serve as mentors for the first and second year PLC members. Students may be eligible for continuing scholarships.
