Southwestern Oklahoma State University senior Chris Gonzalez of McAllen, Texas, won the “Best of Show” Award at a statewide art competition held recently by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition.

Gonzalez, a Fine Arts major at SWOSU, won the award at Momentum, a competition held in Oklahoma City.

Momentum was established in 2001 and is held annually for artists 30 years and younger. Over 200 artists from around Oklahoma submitted their artwork. Of more than 600 possible pieces, only 181 were selected for exhibition.

This year’s event was the third time that Gonzalez had work accepted for Momentum. SWOSU faculty member E.K. Jeong introduced Gonzalez to Momentum in 2005.

“It is exciting to receive such an award,” Gonzalez said. “These events seem to grow each year and so does the number of artists. There is always so much incredible work that I am happy to just get items in the show.

Gonzalez credits Jeong for her encouragement of students to explore and grow as artists and to get their work out in the public.
