SWOSU to Present Brief History of Jazz Concert

Jazz music featuring a chronological performance of the major styles of jazz in the 20th Century will be showcased on Sunday, April 29, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The 3 p.m. concert will be in the Fine Arts Center, and admission is free.

The concert will feature SWOSU Jazz Ensemble "A", directed by Dr. Keith M. Talley; SWOSU Jazz Ensemble "B", directed by Nathan Rapson; and the V7 combo, comprised of current SWOSU jazz students and alumni.

The unique concert will trace the path of important jazz styles from the early 1900s through modern-day, according to Talley.  The performance will feature big band and combo performances including the major styles of New Orleans, Bebop, Cool Jazz, West Coast Jazz, Latin Jazz, Hard Bop, Third Stream as well as modern jazz pieces.

Each piece and style will be briefly narrated to provide context of the times in which the pieces were originally composed and performed. The concert will include pieces by Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Bobby Timmons as well as many other historically important jazz pieces.
