SWOSU Students Sponsoring MLK Art Collage and Essay Contests

Southwestern Oklahoma State University students are sponsoring essay and art collage contests as part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. activities on the Weatherford campus.

Sarah Webb, chair of the Collegiate Activities Board MLK Celebration, said the contests are open to all students—from kindergarten to college—with prizes awarded in different categories of competition. The contests are open to all area students, and deadline is January 17 with entries being turned into Room 214 of the Stafford Center.

The art contest has the theme “The Life and Times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” The first place prize of $50 will be awarded in each division. Second place winners will receive a book about King and a t-shirt. The third place winners will receive a book about King.

Webb said the collage can be as creative and unique as possible but needs to meet the following requirements:

  • The collage is to be up to 11” X 17”.
  • The collage should contain a quote by King that the person admires most.
  • It should consist of photos, magazine clippings, newspapers and other creative artifacts that represent the life and times of King.

The collages will be displayed at SWOSU from January 21-24 in the Memorial Student Center lobby.

There will be three categories of competition in the essay contest: ages 12 and under, ages 13-18, and SWOSU students. Winning essays will win $100 in chamber of commerce bucks.

Theme of the essay contest is “The Life and Times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and How His Work has Impacted MY Life.” Essays should be three pages maximum and preferably typed.
