Gallery of the Plains Indian Art Show This Weekend


American Indian art media will be highlighted during the 26th annual Gallery of the Plains Indian Art Show this Labor Day weekend in Colony.

The show in Colony will run Saturday through Monday, August 30-31 and September 1.  Art will be on display in the Gallery of the Plains Indian Building on August 30 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., August 31 from 12 noon until 6 p.m. and on September 1 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the show.

The event is a program of Southwestern Oklahoma State University and will feature many famous American Indian artists as well as special art displays by SWOSU art students and faculty. Patrick Riley, exhibit co-coordinator, said displays will include bead work, gourds, feather work, canes, flutes, jewelry, apparel, necklaces, ceramics, sculptures, drawings, paintings and craft items.

Also going on during the weekend in Colony will be the 67th annual Cheyenne & Arapaho Celebration and PowWow. A new event this year will take place on Saturday, August 30, when the Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribal College, headquartered at SWOSU,  will have its first-ever graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Colony PowWow grounds. A meal will follow the event.
