Music Therapy Expo Planned Wednesday at SWOSU

The Oklahoma Music Therapists and Southwestern Oklahoma State University Music Therapy Student Association are planning a Music Therapy Awareness Expo this Wednesday,  February 18, on the SWOSU campus in Weatherford.

The expo will be held from 4-5 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center Ballroom. Vendors and participants are invited to attend.

Dr. ChihChen Sophia Lee, MT-BC, director of the music therapy program at SWOSU, said poster and video presentations by participating Oklahoma music therapists will focus on the clinical applications of music therapy in early intervention, special education, pediatric medicine & adolescent acute physical rehabilitation, psychiatrics, developmental disabilities, at-risk youth, and hospice.

Participants will also experience the power of music therapy via drop-in Drum Circle, an active music making technique of music therapy, facilitated by members of SWOSU Music Therapy Student Association.

"This is especially a wonderful opportunity for high school students interested in pursing music therapy as a career," Lee said.

Venders participating in the event include: The Children's Center of Bethany; Hospice Circle of Love; Denton Independent School District (TX); Integris Bass Healthcare Center of Enid-Meadowlake Behavior Center; Northern Oklahoma Resource Center of Enid; Rise School of Stillwater; and SWOSU Music Therapy Clinic. The event is sponsored by the SWOSU Department of Music.

SWOSU has the only music therapy program in the state of Oklahoma, accredited by the National Association of School of Music and American Music Therapy Association. SWOSU graduates since 2002 have a 100% passing rate on the National Board Certification Exam for Music Therapists.
