SWOSU Wind Ensemble to Present Concert This Friday

The SWOSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. James South, will perform a free concert this Friday, February 18, at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the Weatherford campus.

Dr. David Bessinger, associate professor of music at SWOSU since 1984, will be featured as marimba soloist with the ensemble.

Selections will include Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble by American composer David Gillingham, Hold This Boy and Listen by American composer Carter Pann, and Popcopy, a three-movement work by American composer Scott McAllister.

"Even though all of these works are very contemporary, each one is a joy to hear," South said. "The music is tuneful, beautiful, and in some cases, simply fun."

South said Bessinger is a marvelous and virtuosic soloist and he said the concert will be enjoyable for listeners of all ages.

South is in his 16th year as director of bands at SWOSU and also serves as chair of the SWOSU Department of Music.  The Wind Ensemble has performed under his baton at OMEA conventions in Tulsa in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and recently in 2011.
