Students Attend ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at SWOSU

Forty-seven middle school students from around Oklahoma chose to experience a new type of summer vacation this year by attending the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp, hosted by Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The two-week camp, which ended July 1, was one of only 25 held across the United States and gave selected students the unique opportunity to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) while also experiencing life on a college campus. The camp brought together the sixth, seventh and eighth graders for an unforgettable experience.

The residential camp provided students with hands-on experiments, individual and team projects, field excursions, inspiring role models and innovative programs designed to encourage continued engagement in math and science courses in school. The camp also focused on developing leadership, communication and teamwork skills. The ultimate goal of the program is to raise students’ awareness of career possibilities in STEM-related fields. Wayne Trail serves as the director of the SWOSU camp.

A selection committee helped identify students who would most benefit from the expense-paid camp as participants.
