SWOSU Seeks Nominations for Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame


Nominations for the Distinguished Alumni Award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford are now being accepted, and several changes were recently made in regards to the nomination process.

The award was established by the university and alumni association to honor outstanding formers students and to celebrate their achievements. There are currently 77 alumni recognized in the SWOSU Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

Lynne Thurman, assistant to the president for institutional advancement, said one of the changes in the nomination process is in regard to what constitutes an alumnus. Instead of restricting nominations to graduates only, eligible nominees must have completed at least 12 hours in good standing at SWOSU. This is a similar policy at many other universities. Criteria for selection are career distinction, service to society and service/support to SWOSU.

A nomination form is available in the SWOSU Institutional Advancement Office or on the SWOSU website at http://www.swosu.edu/alum-foun/alumni/nomination.asp.

In addition to the award nomination form, nominators are encouraged to provide supporting items that further distinguish the nominee. Such items are, for example, a current biography, up to three letters of support from non-family members, newspaper and magazine articles, personal stories or other items of interest. To keep the nomination confidential, nominators will need to submit as much information as possible about the nominee.

Thurman said nomination forms will be held for each individual for a period of three years. If an individual is not selected for the award, the nomination form may be updated and renewed by the original or other appropriate nominator for consideration in any subsequent years of the three-year period.

The SWOSU Distinguished Alumni Committee is asking for nominations by November 4 to be considered for this year’s selections.
