SWOSU Plans Events for Dawg Days

Southwestern Oklahoma State University is preparing for the return of students and planning many events during “Dawg Days” on the Weatherford campus. Classes start August 22.

“The first month is vital to the happiness of new students, “said SWOSU Dean of Students Cindy Dougherty. “Dawg Days is designed to introduce them to the non-academic side of college. It also gives everyone a chance to reconnect with returning students.”

Dawg Days kicks off with Move-In Day this Saturday, August 18. The residence halls open at 9 a.m. for residents. Later that night, Project Blue will get underway at 7:30 p.m. and run until 9:30 pm in the Wellness Center. There will be free food, giveaways and lots of fun activities including an exotic petting zoo, Wii Dance tournament, Singing Bee, dunk tank, and spray-on-tattoos.

The annual oozeball tournament is set for Sunday, August 19. The sand in the volleyball court near Neff Hall is replaced with water, creating muddy “ooze.” Teams in the tournament include Orientation Leaders, Residence Assistants, SWOSU GOLD, the SWOSU Greeks, and the Dawg Days Committee, but all students are invited.

There is a freshman blood drive on Monday, August 20, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Student Center Lobby. The Oklahoma Blood Institute will be on campus encouraging freshmen to donate.

Mass Orientation for all incoming freshmen is planned on Tuesday, August 21, at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. This is a required event for all incoming freshman. After orientation at 7 p.m. that evening, Bingo Night will be held in the University Grill. This event, hosted by the Student Government Association, has great prizes and normally a large turnout.

On Thursday, August 23, is ResLife’s annual Block Party beginning at 5 p.m. outside the Memorial Student Center. There will be free food, inflatable games, a cash cube and live band. At 9 p.m. that night, the fun moves inside the Student Center for a video DJ and dance.

Free bowling at Southwestern Lanes is available on Friday, August 24, from 5-10:30 p.m. for all students with a student ID.

Coming up on Thursday, August 30, is the SWOSU Organizational Fair. Student organizations cover the front lawn of the Memorial Student Center for this big event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Greek Rush runs from September 10-15 for students looking to join fraternities and sororities. Rush culminates with SWOSU Parent’s Day on Saturday, September 15.
