East Encounters West: A Comparison of Chinese and Western Painting Scheduled at SWOSU


An associate dean of fine arts and communication at Beijing Normal University will conduct a variety of activities during a visit to Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford starting January 17.

The visit by Dr. Wei Zhen from BNU will include an art exhibition, lecture, workshop and panel discussion. Admission is free and open to the public.

As part of the SWOSU international exchange program, Dr. James South, dean of the SWOSU College of Arts & Sciences, invited Zhen to visit Weatherford. The event is funded by the Oklahoma Humanities Council and SWOSU.

The SWOSU Department of Art is hosting the art exhibition starting January 18-30 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays in the gallery of the Art Building.

The events schedule is:

  • A lecture over his work will be conducted by Dr. Wei Zhen at the SWOSU Art Building (Room 405), from 2-3 p.m., Thursday, Jan 17
  • A reception for the exhibition will be held in the SWOSU Art Gallery located in the Art Building, from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan 22
  • A panel discussion by Dr. Wei Zhen and Dr. Shaoqian Zhang (assistant professor of East Asian art history at Oklahoma State University) will be held at the SWOSU Art Building (Room 405), Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. The discussion will focus on a comparison of various aspects in Chinese and western painting.  
  • Dr. Wei Zhen will conduct a workshop at the SWOSU Art Building (Room 414), 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan 22. Dr. Zhen will demonstrate the Chinese painting technique.
