SWOSU Students to Present Night of Jazz this Thursday

The SWOSU Department of Music will present an evening of jazz music this Thursday, March 7, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. The concert is open to the public and features free admission. 

Both Jazz Ensemble A and Jazz Ensemble B will perform classic jazz pieces in addition to some newer charts. Jazz B will represent the big band era with Glenn Miller's “Little Brown Jug,” and Jazz A will showcase alto sax player Clint Kubala on the Frank Foster arrangement of “Angel Eyes.” 

Other notable composer/arrangers on the program include the song team Lerner and Loewe, Mike Tomaro, and a Latin infused chart by Gordon Goodwin.  Dr. Richard Tirk will direct Jazz A and will share the conducting duties for Jazz B with graduate students Nathan Rapson and Hector Lopez.

Jazz Ensemble A includes: Saxophonists – Clint Kubala, Oologah; Cody Manning, Washington; Samantha Canon, Enid; Laurence Maynard, Oklahoma City; and Blanca Chávez, Tampico, Mexico. Trombonists –Myles Madden, Clinton; Herbert Herrera, Pond Creek; Abraham Gonzalez, Kemp (TX); and Anthony Valentine, Oklahoma City. Trumpets –  Jakub Chermack, Enid; Evan Neal, Enid; Austin Hardman, Guymon; Tommy Smith, Elk City; and Jimmy Mayorga, Hinton. Rhythm Section – Lauren Horn, Corn; Enid Van Treese, Tecumseh; Bobby Wolfe, Altus; Hector Lopez, Weatherford; Victor Wolf, Newkirk; Judah Muse, Lawton; and Jordan Satterlee, Oklahoma City.

Jazz Ensemble B includes: Saxophonists – Samantha Canon, Enid; Ashley Van Cleave, Larned (KS); Antonio Garcia, Guymon; Keely Clements, Oklahoma City; and Chassy Barrett, Idabel. Trombonists – Herbert Herrera, Pond Creek; Abraham Gonzalez, Kemp (TX); Cherokee Riddle, Muskogee; and Myles Madden, Clinton. Trumpets – Joaquin Martinez, Anadarko; A.J. Yeager, Altus; Austin Hardman, Guymon; Evan Neal, Enid; and Jakob Chermack, Enid.  Rhythm Section – Jordan Satterlee, Oklahoma City; Ashley House, Marlow; Huxley Owens, Ponca City; and Garrett Hofman, Altus.
