Custer County Relay For Life Event This Friday at SWOSU

The Relay For Life of Custer County night of events kicks off this Friday, April 19, in the SWOSU Wellness Center on the Weatherford campus.

Thirty-five teams with campsites are scheduled to participate and 48 SWOSU student organizations will be involved in some way, according to SWOSU Dean of Students Cindy Dougherty.

The evening begins with a dinner for all cancer survivors, caregivers and family members. The come and go meal runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m.

Event Chair Shelby Unruh said there will be lots of food, entertainment and activities throughout the night including a photo booth, massages, hair extensions, a dunk tank, and a moon bounce. Unruh encourages the community to visit the teams’ campsites. There will be a scavenger hunt through the campsites for a $75 Walmart gift card.

Additional activities include a basket auction, both live and silent, beginning at 8 p.m., a talent show at 9:30 p.m., the Luminaria Ceremony at 10 p.m., and a balloon release at the closing ceremonies. Luminaria bags are available for purchase for $5 in honor or memory of someone’s battle with cancer.

Relay For Life’s Fight Back Ceremony guest speaker will be Geanette Atha. Atha is a cancer survivor from Clinton and will begin her talk around 2 a.m.

All funds raised by Relay For Life of Custer County will support the American Cancer Society in Oklahoma to help fund research and provide patient services.
