World War II Veteran Dedication Planned November 9 at SWOSU

A tree-planting ceremony in honor of World War II veterans will be held Saturday, November 9, on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University campus in Weatherford.

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. east of the front stairs of the Old Science Building.

Professor Emeritus Dr. Bill Seibert and Susie White of the Weatherford VFW Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 6143 have been working on the event. They want to encourage any WWII veterans to attend and be special guests.

A red bud tree was selected to replace a previous tree dedicated to WWII Veterans that had been removed because of its aggressive root system.

Oklahoma Red Bud trees are known for the colors they present throughout the year.  In the spring, red buds have pink and red blooms, changing to the summer lavender colors, which give way to the fall hues ranging from reds and purples to shades of orange.

Seibert said the event is casual, open to everyone, and is an excellent opportunity for youth groups, families, veterans, and the community to acknowledge the contribution of WWII veterans.
