Charles and Mary Abercrombie of Amarillo (TX) have given a $440,000 gift to the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation in Weatherford.

The gift will be used to provide thousands of dollars in scholarships to SWOSU students studying in the fields of education and pharmacy, according to SWOSU Foundation Executive Director Garrett King.

Charles Abercrombie is a native of Harmon County, Oklahoma and a veteran of the United States Navy who came to SWOSU thanks to the “G.I. Bill.” He is a 1949 graduate of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy who successfully owned and operated S&H Pharmacy in Amarillo for three decades.

Mary (Campbell) Abercrombie is also a Harmon County native and SWOSU alumnus. The Abercrombies were married in 1948 and are the proud parents of four, grandparents of 12, and great-grandparents of 12. The Abercrombies have been active members of the Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Amarillo for over four decades.

New scholarship funds have been created for the Department of Education and College of Pharmacy.

The Charlie M. & Olivia Downs Abercrombie Endowed Scholarship Fund is named for Abercrombie’s late parents. Charlie M. Abercrombie was a 1943 Bachelor’s and 1955 Master’s graduate of SWOSU’s Department of Education. The scholarship that will be awarded in their name will go to a SWOSU School of Education student whose home residence is in southwest Oklahoma or Wheeler County (TX), where Charlie and Olivia Abercrombie spent most of their lives teaching and ministering to others.

The Charles and Mary Abercrombie Endowed Scholarship Fund will go annually to a College of Pharmacy student whose home residence is in the State of Oklahoma or in one of the counties of the Texas Panhandle.

“This is a most thoughtful gift from two truly remarkable SWOSU alumni,” King said.  “We are deeply touched by the generosity of Charles and Mary Abercrombie in making this donation to their alma mater, and I can say with certainty that many, many education and pharmacy students will be able to pursue higher education thanks to their kindness. The Abercrombies’ gracious gesture will positively impact SWOSU students for decades to come.”
