The Rotary Club of Weatherford sponsored “Professional Etiquette Night” at the recent Teck Trek Camp held at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Besides experiments and hands-on activities, Rotary Club members Patsy Parker and Casey Merryman worked with the 44 eighth grade girls on understanding the importance of dining etiquette, professional dress and good personal presentation skills.  Camp participants learned the “do and don’t” rules of eating when served a formal, three-course meal that was funded by the Weatherford Rotary Club.

Additionally, the campers were encouraged to seek ways to serve their communities through organizations, such as Rotary or other service organizations.  After the eating presentation,  Jonna Myers and camp counselors helped to demonstrate what clothes, jewelry, and hairstyles are appropriate for more professional settings, as well as how to introduce oneself and to interact professionally.

Tech Trek is a week-long, residential camp which is designed to educate and inspire girls about opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Parker is associate dean and Myers is a faculty member in the Everett Dobson School of Business and Technology, and Merryman helps to coordinate on-sight practice experiences for students in the SWOSU College of Pharmacy. They conducted the workshop to prepare campers to meet with over 30 women representing STEM careers at the following evening’s Professional Women’s Night.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) branch from Weatherford, in collaboration with SWOSU, was one of 11 sites across the United States that conducted this national pilot program outside of California in 2015.  Tech Trek is one of AAUW’s programs which help to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.
