Nominations Being Accepted for 4th Annual Tech Trek Camp at SWOSU

Seventh grade girls from Oklahoma have the opportunity to experience a Tech Trek math and science camp at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

Tech Trek will be at SWOSU for the fourth consecutive year during the 2016 summer. Dates are June 12-18.

Teacher nominations of campers are now being accepted through January for the camp, which is uniquely designed for girls entering the eighth grade during the 2016-17 school year.

Campers stay on campus during the week of Tech Trek while they learn about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics); perform experiments and hands-on activities; and interact with female role models who are already working in STEM fields.  Aside from a $50 registration fee, the camp is provided free of charge to Oklahoma residents.

Camp Director Lisa Appeddu said Tech Trek is looking for girls across the state of Oklahoma who are excited by math and science and have at least a “B” average with the potential to excel.

After being nominated, girls will be asked to complete a camper application and undergo a “get-to-know-you” interview.  Forty-four girls will then be selected to attend Tech Trek at SWOSU.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) branch from Weatherford, in collaboration with SWOSU, is host for the program that originated in California. SWOSU was selected in 2013 to be one of the first sites outside of California to host a camp. Tech Trek is one of AAUW’s goals to increase participation of women in math and science.
