SWOSU Commencement is May 7

Approximately 1,150 Southwestern Oklahoma State University students are eligible to walk through the university's commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, at Milam Stadium in Weatherford.

Students who completed or will complete bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees after the 2015 fall, 2016 spring, 2016 summer and 2016 fall semesters are eligible to participate in the ceremony.

An informal reception will be held in the Wellness Center from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Graduates, parents and friends are welcome to relax and visit.

If commencement cannot be held at Milam Stadium because of inclement weather, three separate exercises will be held in two different buildings on the SWOSU campus. An announcement to use the alternative plan will be made on local radio stations, posted on the SWOSU website and social media sites, and the SWOSU hotline number 580.774.3225.

The alternative schedule is:

  • 10 a.m.—College of Professional & Graduate Studies programs including School of Nursing & Allied Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Parks & Recreation Department, Psychology, Master’s Degrees, and Social Work—Pioneer Cellular Event Center
  • 12 noon—College of Pharmacy—Fine Arts Center
  • 2 p.m.—Associate Degrees, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Professional & Graduate Studies programs including Dobson School of Business & Technology and B.S. in Education—Pioneer Cellular Event Center

If the alternative plan is used, the Wellness Center will be open from 8 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. to provide coffee and a place for family and friends to gather while waiting for the appropriate ceremony.

Thomas J. Leck of Hockessin, Delaware, and Terri Schmidt of Washington, D.C., will be inducted into the SWOSU Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame during the 2016 SWOSU Commencement. Leck just retired after a 36-year career at DuPont Company, holding 47 U.S. Patents, and Schmidt is currently the acting director of the Office of Resource Access and Partnership for the Indian Health Service.
