SWOSU Jazz Concert this Sunday will Honor Long-Time Professor

Dr. Robert ChambersSouthwestern Oklahoma State University jazz ensembles will wrap up their concert season with a ‘Salute to the Trombone!’ this Sunday, April 23, on the Weatherford campus.

The free concert starts at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center and will feature Jazz Ensembles A and B and the SWOSU trombone choir. Joining both Jazz A and the trombone choir are SWOSU trombone alumni.

Dr. Richard Tirk said the reason for the alumni returning to campus is that trombone professor Dr. Robert Chambers is retiring after over 40 years of service to SWOSU.  To honor his legacy, the concert will feature one of Chambers’ original compositions, a performance by the SWOSU Trombone choir and a chart by Lennie Niehouse, Bonehead, with as many trombone soloists that can fit the stage.

In addition to the trombone pieces, Jazz B, under the direction of Tirk and Alexander Davis, will perform swinging tunes by Hefti, Jarvis and Wolpe. Jazz A will finish the concert with selections by Nestico, Cunliffe, Gordon Goodwin and others, including an arrangement by two current SWOSU students.
