Don Dowling Family Honored by SWOSU College of Pharmacy

Members of the Don Dowling family were recently honored with the College of Pharmacy Heritage Award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The Heritage Award recognizes a family with at least two generations of SWOSU pharmacy graduates who have demonstrated a commitment to the university, SWOSU College of Pharmacy and the pharmacy profession.

SWOSU pharmacy graduates in the Dowling family include Don (1956 graduate); his sons Jeff (1978 graduate) and the late Doug (1979 graduate); and Don’s sister, Susan Dowling Tigert (a 1969 graduate) and her husband, Gary (a 1969 graduate).  Extended family members who are also SWOSU pharmacy graduates include Dean Copeland (1956), Bill Cypert (1955), Frank Peterman (1970), Joe Tigert (1973) and Michael Tigert (2000).  In addition, by including Susan’s daughter Lisa Tigert, who is also a pharmacist, that is 11 pharmacists in one family.

Don Dowling, who was honored in 2010 with the SWOSU Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus Award, has been practicing pharmacy for six decades.  He retired from Wyeth Labs as director of sales after being with the company for over 40 years.  He then started working at the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas and, 15 years later, still works there.  Dowling is still involved in the Texas Pharmacists Association and the West Texas Pharmacy Association.

Both of Don’s sons, Doug and Jeff, practiced pharmacy too.  Doug worked in the Arlington (TX) area before his passing in 2007.  Jeff retired from practicing pharmacy in 2016, but like his father, could not stay away and now practices part-time in the Dallas area.  He is also an oil and gas independent consultant.

Don’s sister, Susan Dowling Tigert, has been a pharmacist at Mercy Memorial Hospital since 1971.  She and her husband, Gary, have Tigert Pharmacy in Ardmore, and both have been active members of the community for many years.

The Dowlings and Tigerts were frequent participants in the SWOSU Continuing Education Travel Seminars. The Dowling family members have all been supporters of the pharmacy profession on the local or state levels as well as the SWOSU pharmacy program.

Each family member received an engraved Heritage Award Commemorative Coin, College of Pharmacy blanket, and their names displayed on a tree stake in the garden area by the College of Pharmacy Heritage Tree, a Texas white bud tree that was planted in 2014 for the College of Pharmacy’s 75th anniversary celebration.
