SWOSU Nominates Hendricks for Research Day at the Capitol

Bessie senior Lindsey Hendricks has been selected by Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford as its nominee for the 2018 Research Day at the Capitol.

Hendricks, majoring in biological sciences, will present her research on March 26, 2018, on the effects of pesticide in a poster titled, “Pick your poison: Sublethal effects of pesticides on amphipod life history and development.”

Hendricks’ advisor is Dr. Rickey Cothran, assistant professor in the SWOSU Biological Sciences Department.

"Lindsey is a dedicated student and a joy to have in the lab,” Cothran said. “She discovered that environmentally relevant concentrations of a commonly used insecticide do not affect the growth and development of a common aquatic invertebrate.”

Her results provide positive news about the resiliency of nature to the onslaught of human-produced chemicals in the environment, according to Cothran. She would be the first to say that while her results are interesting, care should be used when applying this knowledge to other chemicals and organisms.

Hendricks is in the process of writing her results for publication in a peer-review scientific journal. In doing so, she will provide critical data on the non-lethal effects of pesticides in nature.

Research Day at the Capitol is held annually during each legislative session. The event was created to inform the legislature and the public about the high-quality research being conducted at state colleges and universities.

“It's an honor to be chosen for this prestigious event and to have the opportunity to represent SWOSU at Research Day at the Capitol in March,” Hendricks said. “I would not be where I am today if it was not for hard work, love for research, and my mentor Dr. Rickey Cothran.”
