Important Dates and Camp Costs

The Southwest Alliance for Girls' Enrichment (SAGE) in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) will select up to 50 middle school-aged girls across the state of Oklahoma to attend this week-long summer camp.

The following are tentative deadlines for 2018 Camper Selection – Check back in January 2018

  • Girls are nominated by their middle school teachers – Deadline: Last day of January 2018
  • Nominated girls then receive and fill out a camper application – Deadline: third week of February 2018
  • Girls who apply are interviewed to get to know them better – Completed by last week of March 2018
  • Campers and alternates are notified by second week of April 2018
  • Campers send in $100 non-refundable reservation fee* and fill-out online camp forms – Deadline:  first week of May 2018
  • Girls attend camp, with no additional costs, for one full week (Tentative: June 17 to 23, 2018)

*Note: The camp will only cost a small fee ($100) for girls to reserve their spot. Based on financial need, parents/guardians may request a scholarship to cover that amount. Note that camp actually costs ~$1000 per camper, and approximately one out of three nominees are expected to be chosen – therefore, it is an honor to attend. If a girl decides not to come, she should notify the camp director immediately, so that another deserving Oklahoman can participate in this opportunity.

The SAGE STEAM camp will aim to inspire young Oklahoma women and to cultivate their curiosity, wisdom and self-growth.

Desirable Camper Qualities

We are looking for that middle school-aged young woman who:

… is passionate and motivated about learning and increasing her knowledge.

… wants to explore her interest in STEAM and potential career options.

… is excited about the prospect of “spreading her wings.”

… has the potential to rise to the challenges of new experiences.

… may need that extra boost of encouragement and self-confidence to come out of her shell.

… is capable of working collaboratively as a team member and working successfully on independent tasks.…displays resolve to complete tasks.

… has a history of showing respect and appropriate levels of self-control.

Does she have to be the top student?

… Not necessarily. We are looking for campers who will grow from this experience and who will take advantage of the myriad opportunities this camp has to offer.

Does she have to fit a particular mold?

… No. We do not have a particular prototypical camper. In honoring the different skills and personalities that campers bring to the experience, we are able to respect diversity, gain different perspectives, enhance creativity and enrich communication skills. The SAGE STEAM camp will also strive to serve those Oklahoma girls whom may have limited opportunities and exposure to hands-on learning and programming -- whether this is due to financial reasons, living in rural areas and/or cultural barriers.

The one definite trait our campers have in common are the excitement of learning and curiosity. In turn, this camp offers many opportunities for the campers to discover uniquely who they are and who they want to become - academically, socially, professionally and personally.

In these ways, the SAGE STEAM camp hopes to improve the future of Oklahoma via encouraging more girls to pursue advanced placement courses in high school, go on to college, pursue STEAM careers, become leaders in their field, and thus provide more diverse, innovative, and productive employees to Oklahoma businesses, organizations and state agencies.
