For 125 years, Southwestern has grown alongside the students, families and communities it serves. What began in 1901 as a normal school created to prepare teachers for a growing Oklahoma Territory has become Southwestern Oklahoma State University—shaped by generations of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.
As SWOSU celebrates its 125th Anniversary, we honor the people, places and traditions that brought us here while looking ahead to the generations of Bulldogs who will write the next chapter.
1901–2026
The Bell Tower: A Symbol of Where SWOSU Began
At the heart of SWOSU’s 125th Anniversary identity is a symbol that reaches back to the university’s earliest days on the Hilltop. The bell tower crowned Southwestern’s first campus building—the Main Building, later known as the Administration Building—and became one of the defining features of the young institution. Though the building was lost to fire in 1939, the bell tower remains a powerful visual connection to SWOSU’s beginnings and to the generations who came before.
For SWOSU’s 125th Anniversary, the bell tower has been brought forward as a central element of the anniversary logo. More than a representation of a lost building, the tower symbolizes continuity—linking the students, faculty and community who built Southwestern’s first home with the generations of Bulldogs who followed. Its place in the 125th Anniversary identity honors where SWOSU began while looking toward the next chapter of its story.
125 Years of SWOSU: From Normal School to University
On March 8, 1901, the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature authorized the establishment of a normal school in southwestern Oklahoma to prepare teachers for the territory’s public schools. After a hard-fought contest over its location, Weatherford became the school’s home. Southwestern’s earliest classes met in borrowed spaces around town before the institution established its permanent home on the Hilltop.
As Oklahoma changed, Southwestern changed with it. New programs broadened its mission, new buildings reshaped the campus, and generations of students made the Hilltop their own. The institution evolved from a teacher-training school into a comprehensive university, becoming Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1974.
Buildings, programs and names have changed across 125 years. What has endured is Southwestern’s connection to its students, its community and the Hilltop that generations of Bulldogs have called home.

Order 125th Anniversary Merchandise for Your Department or Office
SWOSU departments and offices interested in creating their own 125th Anniversary apparel, giveaways, signage or promotional items should begin by completing the 125th Anniversary Merchandise Request Form. The form helps PR and Marketing provide the correct artwork, confirm brand requirements, coordinate approved vendors and purchasing processes, and avoid duplicate or overlapping projects across campus.
This request process is only for university departments and offices planning their own 125th Anniversary merchandise or promotional materials. Individual retail merchandise will be available separately through the SWOSU Bookstore – Alma Mater Merc and SWOSU Foundation.
