June 6 – 18, 2021
Flying High at the Stafford Museum
The Southwestern Summer Science and Mathematics Academy is funded by Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a grant from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. Thirty-two high ability students who will be Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors in Fall 2021 are invited to experience University life through the study of Science and Mathematics.
During the first seven days of the Academy, students will participate in five academic science units offered by the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. All units will involve hands on laboratory experiences. During the final three days, teams of students will be engaged in interdisciplinary problem-solving units directed by SWOSU scientists. Additional enrichment activities include science and technology seminars, a variety of social activities, and a physical fitness/recreational unit designed to entertain and enhance the participants’ self-esteem and interpersonal communication skills. Career opportunities in science and technology will be an integral component of the program.
There is no direct cost to the students. The Academy and State Regents provide room and meal plans. All materials required for lectures and laboratories will be provided. All participants will be housed in air-conditioned dormitories. Each dorm (men's and women's) will have adult and student counselors. Participants will be provided with a full meal plan in the university cafeteria. Participants will have access to facilities regularly available to enrolled students: Pool, Wellness Center, Library, etc. Participants are required to return home for the weekend.
Qualified applications will be reviewed starting April 1.
