Hanwen Yan serves as Collaborative Pianist and Piano Instructor at Southwestern Oklahoma
State University. She brings a diverse background in collaborative performance, piano
pedagogy, and higher education teaching. Before joining SWOSU, she was a Teaching
Assistant at the Texas Tech University School of Music, where she worked extensively
as a collaborative pianist, vocal coach, and keyboard instructor.
An active performer, Yan maintains a broad repertoire as both a soloist and collaborative
pianist. She has appeared as an international guest soloist with the Tarnów Chamber
Orchestra in Poland and has presented solo and chamber recitals throughout the United
States and China. Her research focuses on piano pedagogy, body awareness, and Body
Mapping. She has presented on these topics at the International Piano Pedagogy Association
(IPPA) Conference in Shanghai and has given lecture-recitals at the national conference
of the College Music Society (CMS).
Dedicated to the development of young musicians, Yan is an active teacher, clinician,
and adjudicator. She serves on the faculty of the Oklahoma Conservatory of Music,
where she coaches students in the Young Artist Division and performs as a faculty
artist. Her teaching experience also includes appointments with the Texas Tech University
Orchestra Camp and the Performing Arts Academy at Oklahoma City University.
Yan earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Pedagogy from Texas Tech University,
a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma
City University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Minzu University of China. She
is a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and the College Music
Society (CMS). While at Texas Tech University, she served as President of the MTNA
Collegiate Chapter.
