College TransfersIn part one of this multi-part blog series, we went over some basics for college students who are considering transferring. There are several reasons why you might be in this position, and depending on your circumstances, there are a few different steps or areas you should be keeping an eye on as you complete the process.

At Southwestern Oklahoma State University, we’re happy to offer numerous college transfer services as one of the top colleges in Oklahoma. We’ll assist you with every step of this process, from confirming whether you have met the proper eligibility thresholds to assistance with financial aid, major selection and a variety of other areas. Here are some other important areas of research to ensure you perform while considering a transfer from one school to another.

Acceptance Rates

If you’re still in the early stages of your research about and are looking to list the various schools you might have interest in, one major area to keep an eye on is acceptance rates. Admission rates vary significantly from schools, as are transfer rates – as you might expect, some colleges like Harvard or Yale don’t have very many students transferring away.

At some schools, however, acceptance rates will vary. Many schools have wide rates of acceptance for transfer students, while others will be stricter based on grade level or other qualifications. Be sure to do this research, so you understand your chances of getting into the schools you apply to.

Will Credits Transfer?

Another factor that varies between each school you might be applying to is whether and how your prior credits will transfer over. You may be able to transfer some or all of your previous credits over in most cases, but there also may be some schools or situations where this isn’t possible.

This might involve some detailed research, including phone calls to a registrar’s office. But it’s a vital area to find out about before moving forward with college transfers, as many credits would be rendered useless if they do not transfer over properly.

Major Themes

Another big question to ask as you’re evaluating schools is whether those you’re researching have similar major requirements as the one you already carried—or new ones if you’re looking to make a switch here. This area also involves finding out whether a given major at your new transfer school might contain core requirements or previous courses you have not taken, courses you’d either have to complete later or cover in an online setting.
