The Southwestern Summer Science and Mathematics Academy is funded by Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a grant from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.Thirty-two high ability students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in Fall 2018 are invited to experience University life through the study of Science and Mathematics. During the first seven days of the Academy, students will participate in six academic science units offered by the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. All units will involve hands on laboratory experiences. During the final three days, teams of students will be engaged in interdisciplinary problem-solving units directed by SWOSU scientists. Additional enrichment activities include science and technology seminars, a variety of social activities, and a physical fitness/recreational unit designed to entertain and enhance the participants’ self-esteem and interpersonal communication skills. Career opportunities in science and technology will be an integral component of the program.

Eligibility

Students who will be sophomore, juniors, or seniors in Fall 2018 and who meet two of the following requirements may apply for admission:

  • Rank in the top 75th percentile on the MATS, ITBS, SAT, or ACT test.
  • Rank in the top 25% of their class.
  • Have a 2.5 or higher GPA in college prep classes.
  • Receive outstanding letters of recommendation.

Cost

There is no direct cost to the students. The State Regents for Higher Education and SWOSU provide room and meal plans. All materials required for lectures and laboratories will be provided.

General Information

All participants will be housed in air-conditioned dormitories. Each dorm (men's and women's) will have adult and student counselors. Participants will be provided with a full meal plan in the university cafeteria. Participants will have access to facilities regularly available to enrolled students: Pool, Wellness Center, Library, etc. Participants are required to return home for the weekend.

Application Due Date

Qualified applications will be accepted starting March 15th with the review process starting on a first come basis on April 1st, 2018.

Recent funding cuts may require this program to reduce the number of participants, and/or shorten the length of the program.
