college-of-pharmacy-sealThe Strategic Plan of the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy is driven by our mission. Strategic priorities reflect the major themes of our mission statement and each goal represents a means by which the College fulfills its mission.

Mission

The College of Pharmacy educates and empowers pharmacy graduates who, as part of a healthcare team, aspire to a lifelong commitment of personal and professional development and exceptional patient-centered care. The College of Pharmacy creates, disseminates, and applies knowledge and innovation to advance the health and wellness of culturally diverse populations.   

Strategic Priority 1:  Enhance the Quality of the Doctor of Pharmacy Program

Goal 1.1: Develop a plan to recruit highly qualified and diverse students.

  • Develop a recruiting and marketing package using print, web, and social media platforms describing the advantages of a pre-professional and pharmacy education at SWOSU and distribute to pre-professional counselors and advisors at colleges and universities.
    • Recommended Organizational Resources: Admissions Counselor; Admissions Committee; Associate Dean; Communications Committee
  • Develop a recruiting and marketing package using print, web, and social media platforms for distribution to alumni pharmacists.

  • Expand programs and activities for high school students to promote awareness and interest in pharmacy as a profession.

Goal 1.2: Improve infrastructure for optimal support of the program.

  • Install technology and provide training to optimize the quality of communication and content in respect to distance-based meetings, professional development activities, and educational programming.

  • Design and dedicate space, including appropriate technology, to support interprofessional education.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Dean; Executive Committee; Interprofessional Education Coordinator
  • Continue efforts to secure a new College of Pharmacy building.

Strategic Priority 2:  Expand College-wide Professional Development

Goal 2.1: Provide College of Pharmacy faculty and staff with programs and activities for continuous development of personal and professional growth.

  • Define and prioritize specific professional development themes and activities for faculty and schedule at least two programs annually.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Faculty Development Committee
  • Define funding opportunities for individual faculty professional development and self-enrichment activities.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Dean; Executive Committee; Resources Committee
  • Schedule at least one program annually dedicated to leadership development for administrative personnel and interested faculty.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Faculty Development Committee; Executive Committee
  • Define and prioritize specific professional development themes and activities for staff and schedule at least one program annually.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Executive Committee

Goal 2.2: Implement programs and activities for students that foster a culture of life-long learning and service.

  • Design activities and programming dedicated to the development and refinement of study skills.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Associate Dean; Continuing Professional Development/Co-Curricular Activities Coordinator; Assessment Committee
  • Design activities and programming dedicated to the development of problem-solving and clinical reasoning before students enter the Pharmacotherapy sequence.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Curriculum Committee; Assessment Committee; Associate Deans; Faculty Working Groups
  • Identify and promote ongoing opportunities for students to provide service to the College of Pharmacy, state and national professional organizations, the profession, and the community.

Strategic Priority 3:  Increase the Visibility and Outreach of the College of Pharmacy

Goal 3.1: Strengthen the connection between the College of Pharmacy and its stakeholders.

  • Increase awareness and engagement of alumni who have indicated willingness to serve as speakers and mentors.

  • Review, revise, and refine the College of Pharmacy website for optimal navigation and promotion of the program.

  • Encourage faculty and students to participate in alumni “friend-raising” activities.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Alumni Development Officer; Dean; Department Chairs; Student Organization Sponsors

Goal 3.2: Provide pharmacists and the public with health and wellness education and training programs.

  • Expand Rural Health Center disease prevention and education programs.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Rural Health Center
  • Identify opportunities for faculty and student involvement in health and wellness education programs.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Faculty Development Committee; Student Organization Sponsors; Rural Health Center

Goal 3.3: Increase recognition of College of Pharmacy faculty and student accomplishments.

  • Develop a College of Pharmacy vendor booth for local and regional professional meetings.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Executive Committee; Alumni Development Officer; Communications Committee
  • Develop a process that recognizes and promotes faculty scholarship and service.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Communications Committee; Resources Committee; Department Chairs
  • Develop a process that recognizes and promotes student accomplishments.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Student Coordinator; Communications Committee; Dean’s Council of Students; Student Organization Sponsors

Goal 3.4: Expand College of Pharmacy fiscal support.

  • Encourage annual giving to the Southwestern Pharmacy Foundation.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Dean; Alumni Development Officer
  • Enhance and support communications to alumni encouraging and requesting the establishment of scholarships.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Dean; Alumni Development Officer; Communications Committee
  • Identify potential corporate sponsors, donors, and partners and develop a strategy to request corporate giving and sponsorships.

Strategic Priority 4: Improve the Competitiveness of Our Pharmacy Graduates

Goal 4.1: Provide programming for students to develop professional skills and increase awareness of emerging health care issues.

  • Design and implement programming and activities to develop professional skills in the areas of professional writing, communications, and interviewing.
    • Recommended organizational resources: Associate Deans;Continuing Professional Development/Co-Curricular Activities Coordinator; Curriculum Committee; Assessment Committee
  • Promote awareness of current health care policy and regulatory issues and challenges.

Goal 4.2: Strengthen student understanding and awareness of postgraduate and career opportunities.

  • Design and implement activities and programming that define career choices and pharmacy practice options for graduates.

  • Promote awareness of available career opportunities for both students and graduates.
