Career Opportunities

Clinical

Clinical psychologists typically work with people who have behavioral, personality, or emotional disorders. Preparation to become a clinical psychologist includes courses and training in abnormal psychology, personality, psychological testing, and individual and group psychotherapy.

Developmental

Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being that takes place throughout life. They work in academic, research and some applied settings such as children's hospitals.

Educational

Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place. They consider a variety of factors such as human abilities, student motivation, and the effect on the classroom of the diversity of race, ethnicity, and culture that makes up American. They work in academic, research or K-12 applied educational settings

Experimental

Experimental psychologists are interested in psychological theory and research. They are primarily employed in academic, research/teaching positions; however, many are employed in industrial and military settings. Experimental psychologists study basic psychological processes such as learning, memory, cognition, language, perception, motivation, and emotion.

Industrial/Organizational

Industrial/Organizational psychologists are most frequently employed in corporate, governmental, and military settings. Their work includes such things as personnel selection, performance appraisal, and training and development of employees. Additional duties include management and assessment of personnel dynamics and effective use of psychological principles in the use of advertisement media.

School Psychology

School Psychologists help children and youth succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.  They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students that strengthen connections between home and school.

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs)

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) are master’s-degreed mental health service providers, trained to work with individuals, families, and groups in treating mental, behavioral, and emotional problems and disorders.  LPCs are employed in private practice, hospitals, community mental health centers, or rehabilitation centers, industrial settings, government agencies, or in private or community counseling agencies.

Social

Social psychologists are primarily employed by colleges and universities in research/teaching positions; however, there are also opportunities for careers in government, advertising, and corporate settings. Social psychologists study such phenomena as social attitudes, interpersonal attraction, personality, group dynamics, group problem solving, leadership, and social processes in organizations.

Sports

Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with the stress, doubt and other psychological variables that accompany competition. They are employed in educational, research or such applied areas as professional or college athletic programs.
