Advising at SWOSU
Your advisor is one of the most valuable resources available to you. Their role is to guide you through selecting classes, planning, and understanding your major. They will help you set goals, create academic plans, explore different opportunities, and provide support throughout your journey at SWOSU.
If you ever need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to your advisor! They may even have answers to questions you haven’t thought to ask yet.
For students majoring in Surgical Technology, your advisor will likely be one of the program's professors. If you're unsure who your advisor is, contact our advising team for guidance!
Goal Statement
The goal of the Surgical Rotation Case Requirements is to contribute to the development of a well-rounded, competent, entry-level surgical technologist. As stated in CAAHEP Standard II. Program Goals, C. Minimum Expectations:
“To prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.”
The Surgical Technology program is responsible for verifying students’ progression in the scrub role through surgical rotation documentation. As students advance through the program, they must demonstrate increasing competence in performing surgical procedures, moving toward entry-level graduate competency.
Clinical Case Requirements
While the program cannot control the volume or availability of specific surgical cases, it is committed to providing a diverse and comprehensive surgical rotation experience.
This document does not limit the program from exceeding the minimum Surgical Rotation Case Requirements.
The total number of cases the student must complete is 120. Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 cases in General Surgery. 20 of these cases must be in the First Scrub Role. Students are required to complete a minimum of 90 cases in various surgical specialties. 60 of the cases must be in the First Scrub Role and evenly distributed between a minimum of 4 surgical specialties. However, 15 is the maximum number of cases that can be counted in any one surgical specialty. 10 diagnostic endoscopic cases and 5 vaginal delivery cases can be counted toward the maximum number of Second Scrub Role cases. Observation cases must be documented, but do not count towards the 120 required cases.
