Music Scholarships

Undergraduate Auditions & Scholarships

Music auditions for admission and scholarships may take place in person on the Weatherford campus, by prerecorded video submission, or virtual audition. Please complete the audition form to select your preferred date or to request an alternate audition day. Generous scholarships are available for qualified students. While students may schedule their audition before applying to SWOSU, we encourage you to follow the below steps.

Step 1: Apply to SWOSU

All prospective students must apply to SWOSU. Apply by March 1 and automatically be considered for academic scholarships. Many students will qualify for both music and academic scholarships.

Step 2: Complete an Audition Form

It’s time to schedule your audition! Complete the form linked below to tell us about yourself and note your audition date preference. Audition by March 1 for priority consideration. Possible audition dates are noted on the scholarship application form, but alternate audition dates may be coordinated directly.

Step 3: Time to Audition!

You will receive a confirmation message with your assigned audition date and time. All students should check in at the SWOSU Music Office prior to their scheduled audition (Fine Arts Center 100).

Audition Requirements

Instrumental auditions should consist of two contrasting selections: One that is lyrical and one that is technical OR a single piece that demonstrates lyrical and technical playing. Excerpts from etudes and solos used for All-State auditions or District Solo Contests can be used. Percussionists: If possible, please prepare material on keyboard, snare drum, timpani and drum set.

Vocalists should prepare two contrasting selections, preferably classical art songs. Sightreading is an important component of the audition.

  1. What is the address for the Music Department?

The Music Office is located in the Fine Arts Center (101 W. Davis, Weatherford, OK, 73096).

  1. Where can I warm up?

You're welcome to use the practice rooms in the Fine Arts Center or the Berrong Music Hall to warm up. Any room that is open is available!

  1. Where can I park?

Parking is available in the lot immediately before or after the Fine Arts Center.

  1. Can I attend classes or rehearsals?

Absolutely! We invite you to attend rehearsals and classes while you're on campus. Music majors are also welcome and encouraged to take a lesson with the music faculty in your applied area while you’re on campus auditioning.

  1. Can non-majors audition for scholarships?

Non-majors are welcome to audition for music scholarships.

  1. What if I missed the priority audition deadline?

Auditions may be scheduled at any time throughout the year but students are encouraged to audition by March 1 if they wish to be considered for performance scholarships.

  1. I’ve completed my audition. What is the next step?

Acceptance and scholarship mailings are sent in mid-December, February, and March, and on a rolling basis in the late spring and summer. If you receive a scholarship, you will need to sign and return the acceptance letter by May 1. Foundation Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and community members, several scholarships are available through the SWOSU Foundation. Some students may receive a portion or all of their music scholarship through one of these sources. Note that no separate application is required. All music scholarships are awarded to prospective seniors who complete the scholarship audition form and audition.

  • Dick Coy Memorial Music Scholarship

    A memorial to Richard Coy, former band director of SWOSU. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Instrumental Music Education major.

  • Instrumental Music Alumni Memorial Scholarship Fund

    Established by various donors in memory of alumni who were outstanding Instrumental Music educators. Recipients are outstanding majors in Instrumental Music Education.

  • James Jurrens Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship established in honor of Dr. James Jurrens, is to be awarded to a music major who is a U. S. citizen. It will be funded on the basis of academic merit and need.

  • Joyce Adams Curtis Memorial Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by Rev. Torrey Curtis in memory of his wife Joyce Adams Curtis. She served as SWOSU instructor of voice and director of the SWOSU Women’s Chorus from 2001 - 2012. This scholarship is presented annually to a vocal student or students of exceptional talent and potential and is chosen by the vocal faculty.

  • Kappa Kappa Psi Scholarship

    Awarded annually to a member of one of the University bands who has made outstanding contributions to the organization and the department.

  • Ladd Memorial Music Scholarship

    A memorial to Steve and Diana Ladd, graduates of SWOSU’s Department of Music. The scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding Instrumental Music Education majors.

  • Malloy Memorial Music Scholarship

    A memorial to Pat Malloy, a former band director from this region. The scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding Instrumental Music Education major.

  • Marion R. Dawson Memorial Music Scholarship

    This scholarship was established by the Marion R. Dawson estate. It will be awarded to a Music major who is a U. S. citizen with home residence in Oklahoma. It will be funded on the basis of academic merit and need.

  • Mary Griffin Music Scholarship

    Awarded to a full-time student in good academic standing.

  • Merle Taff Memorial Music Scholarship

    A memorial to Merle Taff, former choral director of SWOSU. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Vocal Music major.

  • Music Performance Scholarships

    Music Performance Scholarships are available from the Department of Music. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA, complete at least 12 hours toward their degree each semester, and participate in a Department of Music performance ensemble.

  • Orchestra Scholarship Fund

    Established by friends and supporters of the Music department for scholarships to full-time students that are U.S. citizens with home residence in Oklahoma. Award based on financial need.

  • Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Scholarship

    Awarded annually to an outstanding music major.

  • Ruth Nichols Memorial Scholarship

    Established by the family of Ruth Nichols for a student majoring in Vocal/Keyboard Music Education.

  • Dr. Robert Chambers Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Robert Chambers and is to be awarded to an outstanding music student.

  • Tau Beta Sigma Award

    Marching band award given each fall to the outstanding member of the University Marching Band.
