SSMA Criteria

Description

The Southwestern Summer Science and Mathematics Academy is hosted and funded by Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a grant from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. Thirty-two high ability students who will be Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors in Fall 2022 are invited to experience University life through the study of Science and Mathematics. During the first seven days of the Academy, students will participate in four academic science units offered by the Departments of Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. All units will involve hands on laboratory experiences. During the final three days, teams of students will be engaged in interdisciplinary problem-solving units directed by SWOSU scientists. Additional enrichment activities include science and technology seminars, a variety of social activities, and a physical fitness/recreational unit designed to entertain and enhance the participants’ self-esteem and interpersonal communication skills. Career opportunities in science and technology will be an integral component of the program.

Eligibility

  • Students who will be sophomore, juniors, or seniors in Fall 2022
  • Have a 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Receive outstanding letter of recommendation

Cost

There is no direct cost to the students. The State Regents for Higher Education and SWOSU provide room and meal plans. All materials required for lectures and laboratories will be provided.

General Information

All participants will be housed in air-conditioned dormitories. Each dorm (men's and women's) will have adult and student counselors. Participants will be provided with a full meal plan in the university dining hall. Participants will have access to facilities regularly available to enrolled students: Pool, Wellness Center, Library, etc. Participants are required to return home for the weekend.

Application opens March 1 and qualified applications will be reviewed in early April.
